公眾科學：以群眾之力探索世界
雖然公眾科學一詞當新，但是業餘民眾持續對科學做出貢獻已經有很長一段時間了。
十九世紀晚期，一個串起全美志工的網絡便已組織建立起來，展開收集鳥類遷徙的相關資訊。
因之而產生的自一九OO年開始的「聖誕節鳥類統計」調查，迄今每一年在全加拿大及美國境內仍有超過一千九百五十個團體共襄盛舉。
同樣每年一次的「後院數鳥」活動也是從數十年前就開始的一個全球性活動。
不過，現在公眾科學計畫的種類暴增，而且公眾科學家會參與各式各樣的活動。
他們紀錄當地野生生物種類，並監測蝴蝶的數量及遷移模式。
他們會測試當地水質及土壤成分，並監測空氣汙染、水汙染及光害程度。
他們舉凡鯨魚的歌聲、青蛙的求偶叫聲，到太空望遠鏡所拍攝的星系照片，每一件事都會協助觀察。
他們收集並分類蜻蜓幼蟲用以測試汞污染，他們甚至還會點算高解析月球影像中的坑洞數量。
由於公眾科學家配備了智慧型手機以及串起社群體的科學應用程式，再加上自身的好奇心，看樣子在無數科學領域的努力不懈中都做出了貢獻。

聖誕節鳥類統計是西半球的一項定期的鳥類統計活動，這一活動由來自各國的志願者在每年相當於北半球冬季的時間完成。這一活動的目的在於為鳥類學研究以及保護生物學研究提供所需關於鳥類數量統計的基礎數據，同時很多參與其間的志願者也把這一活動當作聖誕節假期的一項娛樂。
