席薇亞·厄爾的職業生涯囊括許多第一次。

1979年,她成為首位行走在水面下三百八十一公尺處海床的女性。

她身穿特製潛水服,因而能夠在海底自由移動不必使用潛水擊繩及背帶。

1990年,她成為美國國家海洋暨大氣總署第一位女性首席科學家。

多年來,厄爾在水底下的時間約已達到七千五百小時;在這些時間裡,她對於自己所觀察到的重大變化愈來愈感到驚恐。

這位知名科學家擔心,海洋正在逐漸死去。

氣候變遷、過度捕撈、傾倒垃圾及化物質暨石油外洩,都還只是眾多原因的其中幾項而已。

厄爾為了因應處理這個問題,在2009年成立「藍色任務」;這是一個為全世界海洋提倡法律保護和保育的組織。

厄爾計畫設置「希望點」這種受到保的區域;這些區域因為面積夠大,所以能夠逆轉損害、恢復海洋健康。

厄爾相信「希望點」可以保護海洋,如同美國國家公園能夠保護土地一樣

在我們今天慶祝世界海洋日的當下以及展望未來,且讓我們記住這一點:保護海洋就是保護地球。
