如果一切照著計畫進行，到了2021年年底，星鏈將會擁有足以提供全球網際網路服務的衛星群。
但是，並非每個人都對這個計畫感到開心；尤其是天文學家紛紛表示臺心。
低軌衛星不同於與地球處於同步軌道上的衛星，它們會干擾望遠鏡觀測而且會在長時間曝光的照片上留下亮痕。
國家太空局也很擔憂；因為已有為數不少差點相撞的事件都牽涉到星鏈的衛星。
撞擊事件在太空中是不計任何代價都必須避免的意外。
太空軌道上的物體均以極高速度進行移動，撞擊當下，即使小如螺絲釘的物件也可能導致災難性的毁損。
星鏈計畫最終打算要發射四萬兩千顆衛星在軌道上。
即便這些衛星中只有很小比例的毁損，也可能導致天空布滿危險的殘該碎片。
星鏈則回應表示，透過微幅修改設計，將能使星鏈衛星減少些許反射光線。
他們也將調降軌道高度到大約五百五十公里；這樣將能讓失效的衛星迅速落入地球大氣層並立即焚毁。
星鏈想安全提供全球高品質的網際網路服務，還有很長一段路要走。
不過，倘若他們能成功辦到，勢必將在連結起全世界所有人這件事上，往前跨出一大步。
If all goes according to plan, Starlink will have enough satellites to offer global internet services by the end of 2021. Not everyone is happy with the idea, though.
Astronomers in particular are very concerned. Unlike satellites in geosynchronous orbits, LEO satellites interfere with telescope observations and leave bright marks on long-exposure pictures. National space agencies are also concerned. There have already been near misses involving Starlink satellites. In space, collisions must be avoided at all costs. Objects in orbit move at extreme speeds, and even things as small as a screw can cause catastrophic damage upon impact.

But if it's geosynchronous, that means that it's going like at a certain position outside of Earth, and it's traveling with the Earth at the exact same position all the time. So you're not going to see streaks in the sky from those kinds of satellites because they're exactly matching the same spot and Earth all the time. That means they're going super fast, the same speed as the Earth rotates.

Eventually, Starlink plans to have 42,000 satellites in orbit. If even a small percentage of those were damaged, that could fill the sky with dangerous debris. Starlink is responding by tweaking the design so that their satellites reflect less light. They also are lowering the orbit distance to about 550 kilometers. That would cause any failed satellites to fall into Earth's atmosphere quickly and burn up. Starlink still has a long way to go to safely provide the globe with a high-quality internet service. But if they can, it will be a major step forward in connecting everyone on the planet.
