The Michelin Guide

The guidebook that gives one of the restaurant industry’s highest honr

Near the end of the 19th century, two brothers founded the Michelin tire company in France. At the time there were fewer than 3,000 cars in the country. The brothers wanted to encourage people to purchase cars so that their company could sell more tires. To that end, they created a guidebook for travelers to help people take vacations by car. The guide contained maps, information about car maintenance and suggestions for places where travelers could stop, especially restaurants.

Since that small beginning, the Michelin Guide's popularity has gone through the roof. The stars it awards to exceptional restaurants are among the most coveted awards in the culinary industry. Starting in 1926, restaurants could earn a single star, indicating that they served excellen food. But in 1931, the guide introduced even higher awards of two and three stars.

The current Michelin Guide describes one-star restaurants as having “high-quality cooking" and being "worth a stop." Two-star restaurants are described as "excellent cooking, worth a detour," and three-star restaurants offer "exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey.

Worldwide, only about 400 restaurants have two stars, and less than 140 restaurants possess three.

a tire specifically has a rubber tread on it. And it's able to be filled up with air, whereas a wheel is really anything round that is put on a vehicle that makes it go.

And we would even say that on a ship if, you know, a traditional like old ship, um, might have a wheel that you used to steer.

In a car, you have the steering wheel as well.

And that, of course, is very different from the tires that you use.

But there is one kind of food in Mexico that I would travel back to that country just to eat it. It's green chili tamales.

Year after year, my birthday meal seems to be the best meal because that's when I get to choose what's for dinner and what we'd be eating. But I do remember one year in particular where we had my favorite... my... the best birthday meal ever, where we had shrimp and a lot of shrimp.

And I love that feeling of getting the shrimp and opening them up and then, oh, and eating them. They were so, so delicious.

So, for me, the best meal I've ever had is birthday shrimp.
