Two years ago as COVID-19 was rapidly sweeping the globe, the world's researchers jumped into action. They took on the task of developing a vaccine that would protect people against the deadly coronavirus. Recognizing the importance of the task, these scientists also realized that they were in a race against time. Dr. Sarah Gilbert was one of the researchers who immediately went to work on the problem. Within a few weeks of hearing about the pathogen, she had developed a vaccine.
If it hadn't been for the events in her life, she might not have been prepared for a crucial discovery.
Dr. Gilbert was born in the United Kingdom in 1962 and decided early on to pursue medical research. One of her first
jobs was with a biotech company, where she learned about drug manufacturing. In the mid '90s, Dr. Gilbert worked in a lab at Oxford University helping to formulate a malaria vaccine. In 2007 she led a research team in search of a flu vaccine that would protect against any flu strain.
A few years later, she worked on the research and development of vaccines against Ebola and MERS. Dr. Gilbert also spent time trying to develop a vaccine that could be adapted to any not-yet-identified but inevitable virus.
