獅子、長頸鹿還有大貓熊一直都相當受到大眾喜愛；不過，近來有一種齧齒動物吸引了很多關注：水豚。 齧齒一詞通常會讓人聯想到家鼠或是野鼠；這兩種都是骯髒有害的動物，會傳播疾病、破壞東西，而且還很難消滅。 但是，齧齒家族也包括一些人們覺得很可愛的動物，例如松鼠、天竺鼠以及倉鼠等。水豚也很可愛，而且牠還是體積最大的齧齒動物。 水豚的學名意指「水豬」；牠們的體型可以長到中型犬的大小，而且體重可以達到跟普通人一樣的重量。水豚吃草時，從遠處看過去就像是毛茸茸的犀牛。水豚個性溫和平靜，因此有些人宣稱牠們是世界上最友善的齧齒動物。水豚愛水，有蹼的腳趾讓牠們成為技術嫻熟高超的泳將。 牠們主要以水生植物和野草為食，而且食量超大—一天能夠進食超過三點五公斤！
When you go to the zoo, which animals do you most want to see? Lions, giraffes
and pandas are always popular. But there's a rodent that's getting a lot of attention these days: the capybara.
Usually the word rodent brings to mind mice and rats. Both are dirty pests that spread disease, destroy things and are difficult to get rid of. But the rodent family also includes animals often considered cute, such as squirrels,guinea pigs and hamsters.
Capybaras are also cute and win the prize for largest rodent. Their scientific name means water pig. They grow as big as some medium-size dogs and can be as heavy as an average human. When they are eating grass, they can look like hairy hippos from a distance.
Capybaras are so calm that some people say they're the world's friendliest rodent.
They love the water, and their webbed toes make them skillful swimmers. They mostly eat water plants and grass and a lot of it - over 3.5 kilograms a day!

又名天竺鼠、葵鼠、荷蘭豬，在動物學的分類是哺乳綱齧齒目豚鼠科豚鼠屬。儘管英文名字叫「guinea pig」，但是這種動物既不是豬，也並非來自幾內亞。其祖先來自南美洲的安第斯山脈，根據生物化學和雜交分析，豚鼠是一種天竺鼠諸如白臀豚鼠、艷豚鼠或草原豚鼠等近緣物種經過馴化的後代。因此，這種動物在大自然已經不復存在。
