垂直農耕：糧食生產新方向

理論上，CEA讓耕種者一整年都能生產作物，同時還能針對收成日期與產量進行高準確度的預測。這些高度控制的環境有一個關鍵要點，就是無土栽培系統，意即植物不是以土壤為生長媒介；而是經由水或是空氣耕種。

其中一種無土栽培系統是利用水輸送養分給植物；另一種是透過魚為栽培植物的水提供肥料。第三種栽培系統則是對著懸掛在空中的植物根部噴富含養分的霧氣。

儘管垂直農耕看似潛力十足，不過仍須克服極大挑戰，才能真正成為糧食生產的未來。建造材料、營運成本以及勞力支出都還太過昂貴，使得垂直農耕尚且無法實行。受控制的室內環境還帶來另外一個問題：少了昆蟲，授粉將成為一項耗時且費錢的人工過程。

只有時間能明，人類是否能夠找出方法讓大規模垂直農耕滿足未來糧食生產的需求。

In theory, CEA allows growers to make predictions regarding harvest dates and yields with a high degree of accuracy while producing crops year round. A key feature of these highly-controlled environments is their soilless growing systems, meaning soil is not the medium in which the plants are grown. Instead, plants grow in water or air.

One kind of soilless growing system uses water to deliver nutrients to the plants.  Another uses fish to supply fertilizer to the water that feeds the plants. A third kind of growing system sprays a nutrient-rich mist on the plant roots, which are suspended in the air.

But the harvest is not just the produced amount that you have, it's also what is actually gathered in.

You have1,000 shucks剝殼；去皮；脫掉of corn... that's the yield.

But what you can actually gather in, you can only actually gather in about 800.

Hydroponics is when water delivers nutrients to the plants.

水耕栽培，是一種不使用土壤種植植物的技術，只透過水攜帶供植物生長所需的營養成分，或是兼使用支撐植物根部的材質，例如：珍珠岩、礫石、木質纖維、砂粒、泡棉。由於不需用土壤，故又稱無土栽培。

aquaponics

魚菜共生，又稱養耕共生、複合式耕養，指的是結合了水生動物中的排泄物與水中的有機質, 分解過濾成植物可吸收的無機盬後供應給飼養箱上的蔬菜，同時蔬菜的根系把系統內的水淨化供給水生動物使用，結合水產養殖與水耕栽培的互利共生生態系統。

aeroponics

氣霧耕是成長的過程中的植物在空氣或氣霧環境不使用土壤或聚合介質。氣霧耕培養不同於水耕栽培或魚菜共生。不像水耕，其使用液體營養液作為生長介質和必需的礦物質維持植物生長；或魚菜共生它使用水和魚廢物，氣霧耕未經生長介質中進行因為水是用霧氣傳輸營養素，它有時被認為是另一種類型的水耕栽培。

Much as vertical farming seems to have great potential, it still has significant challenges to overcome before it can truly become the future of food production. Building materials, operating costs and labor are all still too expensive for vertical farming to be viable. The controlled, indoor environment presents another problem: In the absence of insects, pollination becomes a time-consuming and costly manual process.

Only time will tell if we can figure out a way to make large-scale vertical farming, the answer to our future food production needs.
