小說一開頭，愛麗絲來到史丹佛大學發表演說。
她開始分享一些自己已經分享過千百次的資訊；她根本完全不需要講稿。
但是突然間，她有一個字想不起來。
她奮力思索到底那個字是什麼，她感覺自己好像停頓了一輩子那麼久。
最後，她只好用「那個」草草帶過，然後繼續後面的內容，並且在演說結束的時候，將自己的失誤歸因於時差造成的結果。
回到家後，愛麗絲決定去跑步。
她擊好鞋，邁開步伐，照著自己熟悉的路線跑，可是突間沿路景色卻不再熟悉。
她知道自己人在哈佛廣場，但卻不曉得哪個方向才是回家的路。
她脈搏加速，整個人恐慌起來。
然後，就像剛剛突然消失的方向感一樣，一切又在瞬間恢復正常；於是她快步走回家。
愛麗絲接著又經歷了一些類似的恍神情況。
不過，一直到情況愈來愈頻繁之後，她才接受一系列檢查，繼而確定自己罹患了早發性阿海默症。
