The Global Food Crisis

An Old Problem Searches for New Solutions

Contrary to what many assume, the world grows more than enough food to feed everyone. Modern agriculture created the 20th century's "Green Revolution" - an unprecedented increase in food production. However, the "Father of the Green Revolution" and Nobel Peace Prize winner Norman Borlaug noted at the end of the 20th century that people were still going hungry: "It's particularly frustrating to me that there are still 700 million people approximately who are short of food. We have at least two different aspects of this food problem. One is to produce enough. And the second is the problem of poverty and lack of purchasing power for a large part of the world's population.

In 2019, the United Nations reported that:

Nearly 690 million people go hungry.

About 750 million experience food insecurity.

Approximately 2 billion people do not have regular access to safe, nutritious food.

It's shocking that this state of affairs still exists. Despite all the scientific advances in food production, not much has changed.

The esteemed Borlaug helped save a billion people's lives with agricultural science and technology. He warned that the world's population would keep growing. But the problem, he knew, isn't just a lack of food; it's social inequality.

and you thought you had it bad

We usually say this to people when they complain about something, or if you maybe hear something bad about somebody else, you could say, ''Oh, wow. You thought you had it bad. Listen to what they're going through." It's kind of one of those phrases to help you empathize with some other people who are in a worse situation than..you're in.
