Heated Clothing
Survive in the cold by keeping your body warm
How does the battery system work?
One of the benefits of battery-operated clothes is that they heat up quickly and maintain heat. But how are they made, and are they safe? Have you ever used an electric blanket? If so, you might have noticed all the little wires that run throughout the blanket. That's the basic principle behind most heated clothing. Batteries supply a small amount of electricity to the little wires that then heat up the clothes.
The more wires an item has, the more heat it provides. The battery pack is often placed inside a pocket of the clothing. A waterproof layer protects the wires that are built into an inner layer. This clever design keeps the wires safe from rain and snow.
Almost everyone who spends time in cold temperatures will appreciate these products. They provide a definite advantage against winter's worst weather.
With heated clothing, there's less need to worry about frightful weather.
It is easy to lose money in some countries because their banking system is difficult to understand.
Large, old trees have a very long root system, so they can get the water they need.
What system do you use to keep track of how much you spend every month?
heat up 使…變熱
Let the water heat up before you take a shower.
As Bob and Tom's argument heated up, their voices got louder and louder.
Rachel said she was going to heat up some soup for lunch and asked if I wanted any.
…-operated
maintain vs. retain
When I think of maintain, however, I think you're keeping something up.
You're going to keep it going for a long time.
However, retain means that you had it from the beginning, and you are keeping it as long as you can.
So with heat, you can try to maintain heat. If you have the electric blanket, the electricity is plugged in, you're maintaining the heat.
However, if you're retaining heat, that means your heat is slowly running out, but you're able to retain at least some of it.
the toxic fumes.
electric fire
run
A river that runs through a mountain range.
the principle behind +(n.)
when we talk about the basic principle behind something, we’re talking about not every aspect of something but one of the foundational things of that thing.
inner(adj.)
No outside light can get into the inner room of our house.
I get a sense of inner peace when I'm around Riley because he is always so calm.
Ricky told his mom that the red bump on his inner leg was from a bug bite.
The cold temperatures and large amount of snow we have make it difficult to walk outside. 低溫
Meryl decided to take her baby's temperature because he felt hot when she touched him.
All of the plants will die when the temperature goes below zero.
waterproof vs. water-resistant
What that means is that if you accidentally get some water on them, they're going to... it might keep the water out, but it isn't exactly waterproof.
That means you don't want to put your arm into water or something like that.
But if a watch is waterproof, that means that that watch is OK to actually go into water.
And if you might see the words "water-resistant" on a watch and it lists the depth, so it might say "water-resistant up to 25 meters", that means it is waterproof up to 25
meters deep. But don't go any deeper than that.
So waterproof usually or generally is the stronger of these two words.
IPX-(#)+waterproof
to provide/ give an advantage
Well, an advantage is a condition that gives a greater chance of success.
We talk about the advantages of something, the benefits of something.
So if you're providing an advantage for something, you're making it have a greater chance for success.
We could also say "to give an advantage".
That's another way we could read this sentence.
They give an advantage against winter's worst weather.
ice storm
But a blizzard is when there is so much snow and so much snow accumulation (that means how much snow is actually on the ground), um, that you can't see very far.
You can't even walk through the ground 'cause (because) the snow is so high.
A blizzard is a severe snowstorm with high winds. You don’t wanna be stuck in a blizzard if you’re traveling on the road from one place to another.
precipitation降雨
precipitation is pretty much any kind of weather that comes out of a cloud from the sky
Frost is a thin white layer of ice that forms in below-freezing temperatures.
I especially like frost when it's, um, on the outside of a window, kind of just makes me think of winter.
However, frost can be dangerous if it gets on the windshield of your car.
That is wet, partly melted falling snow.
This is something I don't see very often here in Taiwan, just like frost.
But there's another word that you should know as well.
And that is the word "hail".
Hail is small hard balls of ice that fall from the sky just like rain does.
That's right.
Well, friends, we hope you've enjoyed this lesson.
