Flower Power

Flowers can do more than you think

Random Acts of Flowers accepts donations of previously used flowers, often from weddings, and rearranges them. The flowers are then given to people in hospitals and nursing homes. In their first year, the organization served fewer than 100 people. But by 2018 they had given out close to 300,000 bouquets.

According to many studies, fresh flowers and plants can help with the healing process. A Harvard study found that flowers bring health benefits, including reduced stress. A different study found that patients with flowers had shorter hospital stays and lower levels of pain.

A 2001 Rutgers study discovered that flowers help reduce depression. The University of Tennessee Medical Center did a study on Random Acts of Flowers in 2016. Almost 95 percent of the patients who had received flowers reported an improvement in their emotional condition.

Time spent in hospitals and nursing homes is no bed of roses. But groups like Random Acts of Flowers are making a difference. They give away fresh flowers to show kindness and promote healing.

When we think of the word "bloom," a flower might come to mind.

If a person is blooming, that means they are doing very well.

They are confident and maybe using their gifts and talents in a meaningful way.

A person might be an early bloomer or a late bloomer.

That's just talking about their age when they start to feel confident and successful.

So impressive young people who write books or start companies in their teens might be early boomers.

But it's important not to compare your success to that of others.

It may take more time to find your passion or to practice a skill until you've mastered it.

Director Ang Lee didn't have his first hit movie until his 40s.

And world-famous chef Julia Child wrote her first cookbook when she was 50.

One of England's most accomplished prime ministers, Winston Churchill, wasn't elected until he was 62.

He helped lead the country through the Second World War.

But did you know that he failed his college entrance exam twice?

Wow!

Well, that just goes to show that it's never too late to improve yourself and follow your dream.

I... do, but if someone like one of our clients didn't understand, how would you explain "all hands on deck"?

Oh.

"All hands on deck" just means you need everyone's help with something.

It's a really good phrase if you have a big task that is difficult to do and you need a lot of people's help.
