當新冠疫情出現時，吉爾伯特博士已經在病毒疫苗研究工作上居領先位置理二十五年。

她表示:「身為疫苗研發者…我的確是能賺到巨額利潤。」不過，她卻選擇分享疫苗製作資訊。
的確，莎拉·吉爾伯特已經放棄賺取數百萬美元的好機會；但也許她得到的更大回報是一她為拯救人類生命所做的努力，無庸置疑地，將影響無數人。
When COVID-19 emerged, Dr. Gilbert had already been at the cutting edge of vaccine research against viruses for 25 years. That fact, along with her research, allowed Dr. Gilbert and her team to start developing a vaccine to protect people against the imminent danger of the virus.
In an interview Dr. Gilbert explained their process."All we had to do was find the genetic information for the coronavirus and add it into our technology." The biggest challenge for the team, though, was the urgency. Their heroic efforts were rewarded, and on Dec. 30, 2020, AZ was approved for use in the U.K. Since then, more than 1.5 billion doses have been distributed around the world.
While other pharmaceutical companies are making a fortune from their COVID-19 vaccines, Dr. Gilbert has refused to patent AZ or profit greatly from it. She stated, "As the individual who invented the vaccine... I could have raked in a huge profit." But she chose, instead, to share the information.
It's true that Sarah Gilbert has given up a chance to make millions of dollars. But perhaps her greater reward is the certainty that her life-saving efforts will impact millions of people.
