THE ALHAMBRA
Amazing and beautiful architecture characterizes this palace complex
Alhambra's largest room, the elegant throne room, lies in the Comares Palace. Seated beneath a beautiful wood ceiling made of more than 8,000 pieces of wood, the sultan received visitors here. The last sultan surrendered to King Ferdinand and
Queen Isabella in 1492, ending Muslim rule in Spain. The king and queen moved right into the Alhambra, and not many months later they received Christopher Columbus there. They gave him the go-ahead and money to take his trip to the New World.
Napoleon invaded Spain in 1808 but was driven out several years later. Legend says that on his way out, he tried to blow up the Alhambra. One of his soldiers refused to do it and stayed behind to disarm the bombs. Today the Alhambra receives thousands of visitors each day. If it had not been for that brave soldier, guests might
be seeing only ruins.
The Alhambra is a treat for the eyes. The beauty of the palaces and gardens gives
peace and inspires awe in all who visit the magnificent place.
