WHY DO WE DREAM?

The mystery of our nighttime experiences

Other experts think that dreams help us practice ways to respond to dangerous situations. Or perhaps they help us process strong emotions we felt during the day.

Artists often find that dreams inspire their most creative work. This may be because the rational parts of our brains are less active when we are dreaming.

The thought processes that sometimes limit our creativity aren't active. There is also debate about the meaning of our dreams. Do they reflect unconscious desires or beliefs?

Psychologists and others have proposed possible meanings for images that commonly appear in dreams. The problem is that there is no way to check whether these proposals are correct or whether the content of our dreams is random.

Nightmares - frightening dreams - are a common occurrence, and they are especially common in people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Thus psychological conditions can influence the content of our dreams. But since people without PTSD also experience nightmares, such dreams are not always tied to psychological conditions.

The function and meaning of dreams remain puzzling despite our most current research. Perhaps in the future we will know more, but for now dreams fall outside the scope of our knowledge.
