A REFUGEE STORY
A voice for the voiceless
What would it take to make you flee your home? For Yusra Mardini it took a grenade penetrating the building where her swim team was training. They were fortunate that the grenade never exploded but just sank to the bottom of the pool. That was in 2015, and Syria was in the midst of a war, and there was fighting in her city, Damascus.
Mardini wanted a safe school and a good place to train. She didn't want to be afraid all the time. Later, after her house was destroyed, it was decided that the 17-year-old and her 20-year-old sister should escape to Turkey. There, with about 20 others, they boarded an inflatable boat bound for Greece. Never could the sisters have imagined that in the middle of the Aegean Sea the engine would break down. So Mardini and three others jumped into the sea. Swimming, they pushed and pulled the boat through choppy waves for over three hours to reach a Greek island.
"Even though I'm a swimmer, I was so scared. I was very tiny, and the sea is not the same as the pool," Mardini recalls.
