SHOULD PLASTIC BAGS BE BANNED?

Would the world be better off without plastic bags?

YES or NO?

Studies have been done in areas with heavy plastic pollution.

They showed that plastic bags make up only a small portion of plastic waste.

Casey: We should still stop using plastic bags. They stay in landfills for thousands of years!

Roy: But banning them might cause people to choose worse options. Paper bags aren't good because they require more energy and materials to make than plastic bags.

Casey: True. But people could use reusable bags.

Roy: But many people forget to take reusable bags with them.

Casey: Well, that's just silly.

Roy: Maybe so, but it's very common. A solution could be charging for plastic bags.

Casey: So do you think plastic bags shouldn't be banned?

Roy: That's hard to say. One good thing is that people reuse plastic bags for their

households.

Casey: How is that a good thing?

Roy: Reusing plastic bags prevents people from buying more plastic garbage bags, so it cuts down on waste.

Casey: Maybe... OK, let's just agree that this is a complex issue.

Roy: And I think we can also agree that you should help me with these groceries.
