Gerta might be a child, but she can tell something is deeply wrong in East Berlin.

The rules are getting stricter, the adults seem worried, and people keep disappearing.
這裡規則越來越嚴格，大人們看起來都很擔心，甚至還有很多人失蹤了。
Recently, Gerta has heard her parents talking in quiet voices about escaping to West Berlin.
格瑞塔最近也聽到爸媽輕聲細語在討論要逃到西柏林去。
However, when her father and middle brother, Dominic, cross the border to look for jobs,

they don't come back.

A few days later, Gerta wakes up to a terrible surprise.

During the night, East German soldiers have begun building a wall along the border between East and West Berlin.

A deadly line of barbed wire and guns now divides her family.

Gerta wishes to be reunited with her father and brother.

One day, Gerta is walking home past the wall when she sees her father waving to her from a viewing platform.

Part 2
A Night Divided
Gerta puzzles over her father's message.
格瑞塔絞盡腦汁去解讀爸爸的訊息。
The meaning becomes clearer when she receives a book that has been smuggled over from West Berlin.
她收到一本從西柏林走私過來的書之後就比較理解爸爸的意思了。
Inside, there's a drawing of an old building near the wall.
在那本書裡有一張圍牆附近的一棟老建築的手繪圖。
Gerta concludes that this must be where her father wants her to dig.
格瑞塔所得到的結論是她爸爸要她去那裡開始挖
With the help of Fritz, her eldest brother, Gerta begins on a secret tunnel.
在大哥弗利茲的幫助之下，格瑞塔開始挖一條秘密通道。
They tell the East Berlin government that they are digging a garden.
他們倆告訴東柏林政府他們要在那裡整頓出一個花園。
This makes their presence near the wall less suspicious.
這使得他們出現在圍牆旁邊時不那麼可疑。
Later, they persuade their mother to assist them.
不久後，他們也說服了媽媽一起來幫忙。
One day, Gerta is in the tunnel when she hears a strange noise.
有一天，格瑞塔在通道裡聽到了個奇怪的聲音。
She is shocked to see it is her father.
她很吃驚那其實是她爸爸
He wasn't asking her to dig to him; he has been digging a tunnel to her!
他不是叫她要挖通道過去，而是他正在挖通道要過來她這邊！
Gerta is elated and rushes home for her brother.
格瑞塔感到非常高興，並馬上趕回家找大哥。
However, the police are there to take Fritz away.
然而警察在他們家，是要來把弗利茲給帶走的。
Gerta's mother trades her car for the police to let them leave the house.
格瑞塔的媽媽透過用車子賄賂警察，讓他們得以逃離。
Gerta, Fritz, and their mother then escape through the tunnel to West Berlin and find their freedom.
格瑞塔、弗利茲與媽媽就從通道逃到了西柏林，他們自由了。

A Night Divided deals with a tense period during the Cold War (1945 to 1990).

The raising of the Berlin Wall began in the early hours of Sunday, August 13, 1961.

That morning, people across Berlin woke up to find they were separated from friends and family.
