BUYING LOTTERY TICKETS

Should you jump at the chance to get rich quick?

Buying Lottery Tickets

Emma and Jason are good friends.

They are chatting during a work break.

Should you jump at the chance to get rich quick?

Jason is excited about the huge lottery jackpot up for grabs.

He plans to buy a few tickets after work.

Jason: Did you see the Powerball jackpot for this weekend? It's US$ 100 million!

Emma:So? Don't tell me you're going to buy a ticket.

Jason:I'm going to buy several! Tickets only cost US$2 each. I can easily afford that.

Buying Lottery Tickets

Emma:Probably, but you're throwing away good money. Do you know what the odds are of winning?

Jason:No. But they're probably lousy. They are. I read once that the odds of winning a big jackpot are like 1 in 300 million.

Emma:Your chances of getting struck by lightning are greater!

Jason:That bad, huh? But there is still a chance. You can't win if you don't buy a ticket.

Emma:Even if you buy a ticket, you probably won't win. Well, someone will.

Jason:Why shouldn't that someone be me?

Emma:Everyone who buys a ticket thinks the same thing.

Jason:I can dream, can't I? Besides, it's an amusement for me. Instead of spending US$12 to see a movie, Ican buy six lottery tickets.
