Mozart’s Magical Opera
Music Fills the Air as Magic Fills the stage
The lights dim, and music fills the theater. As the curtains open, the handsome prince, Tamino, is fleeing from a giant snake. Exhausted, he faints, but just when the snake is about to kill him, three ladies appear and slay the snake.
The ladies, servants of the Queen of the
Night, show the prince a portrait of her
daughter, Pamina. Captivated by her
beauty, Tamino falls in love. Pamina has
been kidnapped by the Queen's enemy
Sarastro. If Tamino can save her, he may
marry her. The complicated plot continues
until the prince does indeed save Pamina.
The marvelous opera opened in Vienna
on Sept. 30, 1791. When Mozart's friend
Emanuel Schikaneder approached him
about writing the musical play, Mozart
jumped at the chance. Magic was all the
rage in Vienna, Austria, and the two hoped to cash in on its popularity with their magic opera. They succeeded, and today The Magic Flute is the third most
performed opera worldwide. Mozart himself conducted the orchestra for the opening performance. If he had lived longer, he could have enjoyed the
opera's wild success. But sadly, he died
three months later at age 35.
