Are You Scared?
Why do people enjoy watching horror movies?
"Don't open the closet door!" "Don't you dare go down those stairs!" "Just go to a different hotel!" Horror movie fans sometimes say these kinds of things while watching scary scenes in films. But they really want the characters to do those things so they can enjoy heart-stopping scares. Have you ever wondered why people like to be scared? There's no one-size-fits-all reason. For some reason, being scared is just plain fun for some people! The feeling of being frightened to death makes them happy.
Going to haunted houses or horror movies are also experiences they can share with friends. They know they're not in danger, so they can enjoy the excitement of experiencing fear together. The fear makes their brains release chemicals that make them feel good. They also feel closer and more connected to the people that shared the experience with them. Some people also like the feeling they get after they watch a scary movie. They feel strong and capable. Making it through the experience gives them the courage to handle other hard things.
