Don't get trapped by these fishy tricksters!

On social media, it's possible to remain anonymous even after you have started building a relationship with someone. According to the Better Business Bureau in the U.S., around 85 percent of catfishing schemes start on Facebook and the Facebook Dating service. In 2021 as the pandemic pushed many to search for love online, romance schemes, such as catfishing, rose by 80 percent compared to 2020. These scams cost victims around $1.3 billion in losses and left many with psychological and emotional damage.

You may think that victims of catfishing are silly for being easily tricked, but the strategies of successful catfish make them experts at luring people into traps. Catfish make you feel special by praising your looks and abilities. They make themselves sound like the person you've been waiting for all your life. Then, after manipulating your emotions, they take what they want and disappear. Once you realize that you've been tricked, you will probably be heartbroken - or worse. The internet is a wonderful tool that allows users to learn new things, play games and meet interesting people.

However, everyone should be wary of the catfish who hide in the shadows. If someone seems too good to be true, they probably are!
