Actors who perform without words

Silence is golden, especially if you're a mime.

Mimes use facial expressions and body motions in their routines, but never words. Mimes first performed in ancient Greek theaters. Over the years, they made their way onto stages and streets around the globe.

Marcel Marceau of France is one of the world's most famous mimes. He spent over 60 years entertaining people everywhere until his death in 2007.

Marceau used silence, as well as invisible objects, in his routines. Today some mimes still perform Marceau's most famous routines.

Perhaps you've seen mimes pretend to climb out of a box or up a rope. Others act like they're walking into a strong wind.

The living statue is also popular. Mimes pose as statues covered in silver or gold. They're often convincing enough to fool those who pass by. No matter what the

act includes, the rule of silence is typically followed.

Though mimes are not known for speaking, Marcel Marceau gave one bit of advice: "Never get a mime talking. He won’t stop.
