They're fluffy and delightful. They have big beautiful eyes, long legs and necks and small tails. They don't make much noise but can be heard humming quietly to themselves. What are they? They're alpacas.
These animals first came from South America. But don't travel to the Andes Mountains expecting to see one. If you do happen to travel there, you will find
vicuñas. Alpacas are domesticated vicuñas and don't live in the wild.
They are gentle and intelligent animals and can be very friendly. They love the sun and often lie on the ground on their sides to soak it up. Often found in petting zoos, they are also popular as pets. Farmers usually raise them for their fleece. Alpaca fur is soft and warm, so it's used to make blankets, sweaters, scarves and more. It is lighter, warmer and stronger than sheep's wool. A pair of alpaca socks will keep your feet nice and warm on a cold day!
