雙關語 樂趣多ONCE "A-PUN" A TIME

大家都愛玩文字遊戲People love to have fun with language

It's an old riddle, but a good one:

Q: Why was 6 afraid of 7?

A: Because 7 8 9!

So why is that funny? Because the number 8 sounds just like the past tense verb "ate." And if 7 "ate" 9, then 6 should be very afraid!

This riddle, like so many others, is based on a pun - a play on words.

Puns can generally be formed in two different ways. One common method, as

in the riddle above, is by using homophones. These are words that sound the same, but they have different spellings and meanings. Notice these examples:

hear here

right write

won one

four for

Sometimes the word play is based on the sound of just part of a word:

Q: How does a scientist keep her breath fresh?

A: With experi-mints. (experiments)

Jokes like that seem to be a bit of a stretch, don't they? In other words, you

have to stretch your imagination to understand them!
