tall(高的)用法

1.tall常常描述「高度大於寬度」的物體。

高塔(towers)、摩天大廈(skyscrapers)、樹(trees)、人(people)、動物(animals

2.tall用於指「相對」同類物體的高度。

The tree is very tall in the forest.

這個樹很高,其實是說:「這棵樹相對於周圍的樹要高。」

 

3.tall所修飾的名詞一般都是要和地面有接觸的。煙囪(chimneys)。

The chimney is 30meters tall. 這個煙囪有30米高。(煙囪和地面是有接觸的)

 

二、high(高的)用法

1.high常常修飾「寬度大於或等於高度的物體」。比如:山(hillsmountains)、建築物(buildings)、牆(walls)、女士高跟鞋(women heels)。

2.high有時修飾「不和地面有接觸的」物體。比如:飛機(planes)、天花板(ceilings

The plane is flying very high. 這架飛機飛的非常高。

 

3.high可以表示「抽象意義」的高,tall則不可以。比如:

血壓高(high blood pressure

價格高(The price is high

地位高(The playwright has a high place in the history of American literature. 這位劇作家在美國的文學史上有較高的地位。)

 

tallhigh有時也可以修飾共同的物體,比如:建築物、山等,不過high的程度比tall要高。

each

Sometimes you can use either, but not always. In a group, "each" refers to individual things in turn; "every" refers to all the things together. "If I have time, I say 'bye' to each of my colleagues." "If I don't, I say 'bye' to every colleague at the same time."

有時候兩個詞可以交替使用,但並不是所有情況都適用。在群體內,「each(每一個)」是輪流指每個個別事物;而「every(每個、所有)」則是一起指所有事物。「如果我有時間的話,我會輪流跟我每一個同事說再見。」「如果我沒時間的話,我會同時跟所有同事說再見。」

 

If we have two things, we have to use "each." If we have three or more, we can use "each" or "every."

Lions have sharp claws on each or every paw. 獅子在牠每一隻腳上(each)或所有腳上(every)都有尖銳的爪子。

"Each" can be used as a pronoun代名詞, while "every" can't.
