Rising to The Challenge

Cycling through the pain to reach the top

We began early in the morning as a group of 17 riders. But only three of us

would make it to the top. A support car was necessary, especially on a ride like this, to help keep us hydrated and energized.

The first part of the ride went through Taroko Gorge, a magnificent national park. I've hiked there, but I've always wanted to bike it. I saw dramatic rocky outcrops, canyons, waterfalls and forests as I zipped through the gorge and up the 10 mountain road. Even though it was August, the weather was perfect.

Unfortunately, the support car that carried our lunch was delayed. By the

time it arrived, I was famished. Being depleted of energy even for that short time affected the rest of my ride. When the brutal last 10 kilometers arrived, I really struggled to complete them. At one point I could see how close the top of the peak was, but it still felt so far away.

Fortunately, determination carried me to the finish. Exhausted, I conquered Wuling! What a tremendous feeling! southern Italy's smallest villages. It makes La Cava happy to know that he is investing in their future.

gorge峽谷

The Mississippi Gorge Park is located on both sides of the Mississippi River between the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, U.S.A.

Emily frequently zips up tasteless food with different spices.

electrolyte(s)

The famished children ate everything that was put in front of them.

Steven was famished after he rowed his boat across the lake.

The farmers' failed crops for several years in a row almost famished them.

conquer征服

When they conquer high mountains, hikers sometimes put their countries' flag at the peak to show they've been there.

Haley hasn't conquered her fear of snakes, so she doesn't like to walk in the country.

Genghis Khan conquered Beijing in 1214 and then established one of the world’s largest empires.

I came, I saw, I conquered

Back in the times of the Roman Empire, Julius Caesar used this famous expression to report back to Rome that he had quickly and completely defeated his enemy.

So now people say "I came, I saw, I conquered" to express they have reached some kind of victory.

For example, after the audition, Peter said proudly, "I came, I saw, I conquered."

So now people say "I came, I saw, I conquered" to express they have reached some kind of victory.

"I came, I saw, I conquered" is definitely a strong statement to describe a person who has complete success over something.

But it isn't about boasting pride.

Famish vs. starving

deplete

depleted of energy meant you just had no more energy

bonking / hitting the “wall”
