Are Esports Really a Sport

When is a sport really a sport?

So what you are saying is that video game players are real athletes?

Yes.

You know esports players train up to 12 hours a day.

They have coaches and managers, and there is pressure to perform.

Interesting.

I had no idea.

I read that esports are so competitive that some players retire a few years after playing.

I guess they train consistently at a gym, too.

Do these esports players approach video games differently than casual players?

Uh-huh.

I read that their eye movements focus exactly where players expect the enemy to be.

The eyes of casual players dart all over.

But there isn't the active physical movement one associates with sports.

No one questions what to call golf and archery.

They are performed while standing still.

Players need to be exact and skillful just like in esports.

admit you may have a point.

Esports athletes also have better motor skills than other athletes.

Their keyboard movements are faster than the average person.

It's still going to take more than that to convince me it's a "true" sport.

And better hand-eye coordination was observed in professional gamers than in players of other sports.

Hmmm. Does that help them catch a ball?

Well, competitive video gaming is a medal event at the 2022 Asian Games.

Whoever holds the position as sales manager at Fred's company has a lot of pressure.

All movie stars have managers who try to get them good roles in films.

manager v.)

Patty doesn't know how to manage her time, so she always turns her homework in late.

consistentlyadv.)

Everyone wants Tim on their basketball team because he consistently scores 3-point shots.

consistentadj.

Parents need to be consistent when making their children follow the rules or else kids will become very confused.

With the election of a new president, there was a consistent improvement in everyone's standard of living.

so what you are saying is …?

clarifying question vs. follow-up question

This is different from a follow-up question.

A clarifying question is asking for clarity on what someone just said.

A follow-up question might lead to a slightly new topic.

blue

I’m feeling blue today.

connotation of blue is feeling sad.

Another connotation of blue can be a feeling of peace and calm.

There can be negative, positive or neutral connotations for words in English.

For example, let's look at the word "thin."

Thin has a neutral connotation.

A positive connotation would be slim.

Now can you think of a negative connotation of the word "thin?"

A negative connotation could be skinny.

Now another way of looking at the connotation of a word is its suggested or emotional meaning compared to its literal meaning.

Let's look at another example with the words "unique," "different" and "peculiar."

Now unique has a positive connotation, different is neutral, and peculiar has a negative connotation.

motoradj.)

The development of a person's motor skills starts when they are a baby.

motorn.)

I had to call a repairman because the air conditioner motor stopped working.

Elaine left her motor running when she got out of her car to talk to her neighbor.

coordinationn.)

When babies begin to walk, they fall a lot because their balance and coordination are not developed.

Charles Blondin had great coordination and is famous for walking across a rope between two high buildings.

Louise is responsible for the coordination of the new project, so direct all of your questions to her.

archery

billiards/ pool

You may have a point.

If you have reluctance, that means you hesitate to agree or say something.

gross vs. fine motor skills

There are different types of motor skills, but they all require movements with the little muscles in your body, right?

There's gross motor skills, which you need for bigger movements with bigger sports.

And then we call fine motor skills, the ones that we need for doing things like tying your shoelaces or buttoning a button on your shirt.

The fine motor skills are what we all look forward to, um, you know, our kids learning how to do.
