If visiting a recreational fishery sounds like something you'd like to do, you're not alone. Over 10 million tourists visited one in 2020, accounting for about five percent of Taiwan's total tourism for the year. Obviously, recreational fisheries are growing in popularity. If you've never visited a fishing village, common misperceptions may have stopped you from enjoying this wonderful resource.

Many people have stereotypes about the fishing business. When people think of traditional fisheries, words like distance, danger and difficulty might come to mind. Misperception vs. misconception

Now the difference is misperception, that is, how you might misperceive something, that means you see it in the wrong way, you incorrectly understand something.

A misconception is when you have an incorrect belief or opinion about something.

We have stereotypes about all sorts of things and people.

A stereotype is a widely believed and usually over simplified idea of a person or thing.

You might think that all something is something, that's a stereotype.

For example, a stereotype that I've run into here in Taiwan is the stereotype that all foreigners speak English.
