美麗「樹」世界 THE WONDERFUL WORLD TREES

落雨松和水杉一起增添秋季繽紛色彩 The bald and dawn redwood are relatives that provide color in the fall

樹木賦予地球美麗及生命。

大多數擁有錐形毬果的樹木，都是一年四季常綠的針葉樹。

不過，落羽松和水杉的針狀葉卻會在每年秋天轉變成黃色和橘色；然後脫落，到了翌年春天再長出新葉。

落羽松

美國東部與南部的低窪區域是落雨松這種令人讚嘆的樹種所生長的地區。

有些落雨松能長到三十六點五公尺高，樹幹能粗達一百八十二公分。

落雨松的壽命可達六百年，剛開始生長的時候呈金字塔狀。

隨著樹齡逐漸增長，樹頂會往外擴展散開，樹幹則轉為空心。

這種樹的根部還會發展出膝根。

膝根的學名為「空氣承軸」，不過沒有人知道膝根存在的真正目的。

水杉

優雅的水杉原本被認為已滅絕數百萬年之久，但一九四○年代卻在中國的四川省被發現。

現在水杉的種子已經散播到世界各地。

這種生長快速的樹木通常可長到十五至十八公尺高；樹幹周長則可達兩公尺。

水杉經常栽種在花園裡作為裝飾。

Trees give beauty and life to the earth. Most trees with cones keep their needle-like leaves year-round. However, the needle-like leaves on the bald cypress and the dawn redwood turn yellow and orange every autumn. They then fall off, and new

ones appear every spring.

Wet low-lying areas in the eastern and southern U.S. are home to this impressive tree. Some have grown to be 36.5 meters tall with trunks up to 182 centimeters around.

They can live for 600 years and start out in a pyramid shape. As they age, their tops spread out, and their trunks become hollow. They also develop knees from their roots. The scientific name for this feature means "air-bearing", but no one knows their true purpose.

Dawn redwood

Considered extinct for millions of years, the elegant dawn redwood was detected in the mid-1940s in Sichuan, China. Its seeds have now been spread around the world. This fast-growing tree generally grows to be 15 to 18 meters tall. It can be up to two meters around. It is often planted as a decoration in gardens.
