公眾科想介紹你一個非常有趣的新朋友：你的週遭世界!
愉快有趣的自然現象充滿你我居住的地環境，而且現今科技遗使得業餘科學比以往任何時候都更加好玩且唾手可得。
想像你和其他數百人一同與一個由當地大學生物系所籌辦的活動；眾人共同的目標則是：二十四小時內盡可能認出一些當地山上諸如哺乳類、鳥類、蟲子、植物、真菌類等物種。
大家一起使用手機內建相機及應用軟體記錄下數以千計的物種。
這種熱門的公眾科學活動企劃稱為「生態速查」。
公眾科學，亦稱群眾科學或志工探查，是一群眾外包式科學研究。
《國家地理》雜誌將之描述為「為增進科學知識而在科學研究中所採取的一種公眾參與暨合作實踐方式。
透過公眾科學，人們分享成果並對資料監測及收集計畫做出貢獻。」
若不是因為這些手拿智慧型手機的熱心志工群，科學家根本無法從如此廣大的區域裡獲取這麼多資料。
