研究員大衛‧布倫納協助開發了一種可以殺死病毒和細菌的遠紫外線UVC光。

在一個正常大小的房間裡，五盞燈在不到五分鐘的時間便減少了百分之九十八的微生物。

單單要透過通風達到這樣的效果，必須每小時抽換一百八十四次空氣，而這在目前根本不可能做到。

即便在較低設定的狀況下，布倫納的燈仍可以在十五分鐘內殺死百分之九十二的病毒。

世界各國對於民眾可以接觸多少紫外線的標準各不相同。

由於布倫納的團隊是在美國進行實驗運作，所遵守的美國標準比諸如德國等國家的標準還要寬鬆。

但是，即使依照德國的低量紫外線接觸限制，布倫納的燈仍然顯著減少微生物數量。

布倫納認為，即便遵照德國規定，使用這些燈仍可能得以減少當時死於新冠病毒的人數。

未來，遠紫外線UVC燈可能會在所有公共場所普遍使用。

研究人員希望安裝使用這種燈能夠有效預防未來大規模的流行疾病。

雖然，仍有許多廣泛研究必需進行，不過這將可望會是遠紫外線UVC燈所帶來的成效。

Researcher David Brenner has helped develop a far-UVC light that kills viruses and bacteria. In a normal-sized room, five lamps reduced the number of microbes by 98 percent in less than five minutes. 

To achieve results like this through ventilation alone, the air would have to be

changed 184 times per hour, which is currently impossible. Even at lower settings, the lamps still killed 92 percent of viruses in 15 minutes.

Countries vary in their standards for how much UV light people are allowed to

be exposed to. Since Brenner's team was operating in the United States, he abided by American standards, which are laxer than those of some countries such as Germany.

But even working within Germany's lower limit of UV light exposure, Brenner's lights still decrease the number of microbes significantly. Brenner argues that using the lights, even conforming to Germany's regulations, would likely have reduced the number of people who died from Covid-19.

 In the future, far-UVC lamps may be common in all public spaces. Researchers hope that installation and use of such lamps could prevent future pandemics.

Although more extensive research needs to be done, there is hope that this will be their effect.
