A visit to Salzburg in December must include time in the Christmas markets that dot the city. Visit the market stalls for a hot drink and some gingerbread. Then admire the beautiful handicrafts for sale. One market is not far from Salzburg Cathedral, a beautiful old church with a stunning interior.

 The 11th-century Fortress Hohensalzburg stands proudly on a hill overlooking the old city. Take a self-guided tour to explore its rich interior. At the top of the castle, enjoy a drink or a meal in an outdoor restaurant, and look out over Salzburg.

Try one of the best foods in Salzburg, apple strudel, a delicious pastry filled with sweet apple slices.

 Salt was so important to the city that it was named for it. This "white gold" brought wealth to the archbishops. You can visit the Hallein Salt Mine, one of the oldest in the world. Take a train ride into the mountain where miners will explain the mining process. Then enjoy a raft ride across an underground lake.

It does seem like it's proudly sitting there overlooking the city.

Let's take a look at the word "overlook," though, because that could have different meanings.

In our lesson it has the meaning of it's up high somewhere, and so it can see out, it is overlooking something.

Another way you could use it is to see something through or to make sure that something happens.

For example, the contractor overlooked the renovation of the historical building.

That means that he made sure the work got done properly and oversaw... overlooked everyone working on it.

And that's what a supervisor does at most companies,

right?

They overlook the work that the employees are doing.

The reason I like this word is because it actually has

another meaning, which is the opposite of that meaning.

We can use this word to talk about missing something like

a mistake.

Maybe your job is to proofread an article, and you missed a mistake, and someone else caught it, you could say, "Oh, I'm so sorry. I overlooked that mistake."

Now just real quickly, I just wanted to talk about another word "minor" that sounds the same but spelled differently and has a different meaning.

So miner here in our lesson is talking about the worker who goes to dig out valuable things like salt or gold.

M-I-N-O-R is someone who hasn't reached the legal age of an adult yet.

Here in Taiwan it's 18, I believe.

So anyone under the age of 18 is considered a minor.

And that could be different age in different countries.
